ABOUT YOUR COACH

Debbie Keating, RN, CEN, TCRN, dipACLM, NBHWC

I have been a registered nurse for 20 years. 17 of those years I worked in the emergency department. After seeing the devastating effects of chronic disease on patients and feeling frustrated with recurring ER visits, I began to research prevention strategies and lifestyle recommendations. Not until finding the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, did I encounter medical professionals interested in preventing  and reversing chronic disease through lifestyle interventions, instead of prescriptions. I began implementing some of the nutrition recommendations myself and was surprised how quickly my joint pain resolved.

After becoming certified in lifestyle medicine and experiencing the benefits firsthand, I knew I wanted to help others experience the same. I became certified by the National Board of Health and Wellness Coaches (NBHWC) and now feel empowered to help people live healthier, happier lives.

CHRONIC DISEASE

In reviewing lifestyle medicine, there is a wealth of information related to chronic disease, its prevalence, causes, prevention strategies and current traditional health care treatment. According to NutritionFacts.org, studies show that even modest changes to lifestyle can be effective in reducing heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, some cancers; sometimes more effectively than medical intervention. Not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, and incorporating nutritious whole foods may not only prevent but sometimes reverse chronic disease. If you suffer from a current condition and are looking for ways to improve your health, regain your energy and confidence, I would love to work with you. If your physician has recommendations for you and you are not sure how to accomplish them, a health and wellness coach can work one on one with you to achieve your specific goals. Meeting online with you regularly between doctor visits can help you stay on track, stay motivated, and successful in completing your action plan to achieve your goal.

NUTRITION

Confused by all the information available regarding nutrition and healthy diets ? You are not alone. And it makes a difference where you get your information. There is a lot of misinformation spread on various diets including omnivore, low carb, keto, vegetarian, vegan, plant based, Mediterranean,  Beach, intermittent fasting, processed foods, whole foods and more.  According to the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, predominantly whole food plant based diets are best.  If you know what nutrition changes you desire for your specific health condition, we can work to maximize your efforts and find ways to incorporate it in your daily life making it sustainable. If you are wanting to learn more information on various diet and nutrition strategies from evidence based studies, we can explore that too.

STRESS

This is a big one ! We all have stress and a certain amount is expected in life. However, chronic stress over time can deplete one’s physical and mental reserves, suppress the body’s immune system, cause muscle tension, elevate blood pressure, increase stress hormones, affect digestion and nutrient absorption, as well as affect brain neurotransmitters altering mood and outlook. Learn to recognize your triggers. By avoiding stressful or negative situations, relationships, or beliefs,  you can eliminate time and energy wasted recovering from the stress. Practicing mindfulness, utilizing your social support, and focusing your attention on the positives can also help reduce stress accumulation.  Effectively managing your stress can allow you to live in the moment, and have more compassion for yourself and others.

FITNESS

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine recommends 150 minutes per week of moderate activity (or 75 minutes per week of vigorous intensity activity) plus 2 or more days a week of strength training. If you are wondering where is the time for this, you are not alone. But there are ways to incorporate activity in your life without disrupting your busy schedule. Increasing your physical activity bring the benefits of better sleep, weight management, and increased energy. Find what works for you and your schedule that can provide long term health benefits.

SELF CARE

With little time to spare, a coach can help you find ways to relax, restore, nurture and recharge yourself. Whether you prefer breathing exercises, nature therapy, music, walking, journaling, meditation, yoga, a hot bath, or a massage, there are options for you to explore to regain your sense of calm and resilience. Don’t just give yourself permission to spend time on your self care, make that time SACRED. Your wellness matters !

SLEEP

Adults 18+ are recommended to minimally get 7 hours of sleep/day. Having a nightly sleep routine may help. Insufficient sleep has been linked to the development and management of a number of chronic diseases and conditions, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression. In addition, sleep deprivation can affect memory, concentration, mood, immunity, libido, balance, appetite, inflammation, and fatigue. Implementing  proper sleep habits can improve your night’s rest and ensure restorative, restful, and reparative sleep.

COMMUNITY

Shared lifestyles within a community that include healthy eating habits, regular physical activity, strong social connections, and low stress help affirm one’s commitment to living healthy. Strong social connections have been identified as a common component in blue zone communities. A sense of purpose, belonging, and connectedness can bring joy, utility, and value to one’s daily life. Who is your community?
